She
doesn't know it yet, but her mother is dead and her father is not
around. In fact, no one knows who her father is. She has beautiful
brown eyes, and skin and hair.
She is four months old now, and has been
living at the private orphanage we've been working with this month for
her entire life. But she won't be able to stay forever.
Her
grandmother won't sign her over to be adopted, instead opting to have
her raised in an orphanage, so she can visit when she feels like it.
When being the operative word. She is in limbo right now. She isn't given up or taken in.
Good thing she doesn't know.
These
comforting walls will eventually be replaced by a large white washed
concrete group home. These caring hands will be replaced by who knows
what. Her warm crib could become a cot, or a tile floor.
Will she be
hugged?
Will they tell her she is beautiful?
Will they hold her when
she cries?
Will she ever know that she is loved.
Will she ever know
God?
She doesn't know it yet, but heartache is coming. Yet, while
she is within an arms reach of me, no matter for how long, she will
stay wrapped warmly and fed regularly, cuddled and coddled and cooed
at. Because for now, she's here.
And now is what really matters.

From Christianity Today to Catalyst to the Wall Street Journal, the
biblical call to "defend the cause of the fatherless" (Isaiah 1:17) is
on hearts and minds of Christians in a way not seen in generations. Last
year, the national Orphan Sunday campaign led by the Christian Alliance
for Orphans helped stoke this movement to a new intensity, including
more than 1,500 local Orphan Sunday events nationwide.

Every year at Cornerstone's Main Stage, the emcee and some
well-made videos all come together with a feverish pitch: "Adopt a
Compassion kid!"
Every year I watch the videos and listen to the guy on
stage pouring his heart out, and every year I think, "Someday I want to
do that." Even, "Some day I want to adopt LOTS of Compassion kids." I
enjoy the dream, and I hide my face when the Compassion folks walk
through the crowd with cards full of adoptable kids. It's always, "I'll
do that someday," and never, "How about tonight?"

Alongside a compelling news report on Summit VI,
commentary from Pat Robertson on why Christians would - or would not -
adopt is likely to stir serious controversy. It's worth watching the
polite but highly-charged exchange between Robertson and co-host Terry
Meeuwsen. (Embedded at bottom of this post is the full episode of the 700 Club, in which the
adoption segment can be found, beginning at 14:00.)
Many orphan advocates likely will wince as they hear Robertson express
sentiments like, "It [adoption] can be a blessing, if you get the right
child." The troubling statements, however, offer a striking reminder of
three important realities.

Wrecked recently had the chance to sit down with Kevin Hendricks and ask him some questions about his new book, Addition by Adoption: Kids, Causes, & 140 Characters. Here's how it went down.
When you began tweeting, did you ever think,
"Hey, I should turn this into a book"?
Nope.
It kind of just happened. As I kept posting funny and touching things my kids
said or did, people star... Click here to continue reading...

"What's your name?" I asked as politely as I knew how in my broken Espaņol. Not only did he not answer me, he didn't even look up. I did notice the tear trickling down his cheek.
I had taken a group of teenagers from the youth group in our church down to visit "Hogar de los Niņos," which is an orphanage for children in Tijuana. I used to take a group down every other month to bring clothe... Click here to continue reading...

Warner Bros. new horror movie Orphan proclaims that it must be hard to love an adopted child as much as your own.

According to Scripture, there are several things that are very near to
God's heart. They include how we deal with sin, our personal response
to the Gospel, and how we treated the orphan, widow, or poor person in
our midst (among others, of course, but those are the ones that
immediately come to mind).
